So-called ‘national security’ is undermining sustainable security when it comes to human, community and ecological needs. This webinar brought together success stories from those directly involved in efforts to build more sustainable, just and inclusive security, often in spite of the efforts of dominant global powers. We heard from experts about successful international initiatives that have built inclusive and just security. Watch the video here.

Peace conference

Rethinking Security took part in a workshop Creating Peace – ‘Wars, Justice, Peace and Reconciliation in the 21st Century’ at Keele University on 20th September. Presenting alongside a range of people speaking about experiences in Afghanistan, the Kurdish Regional Government in Iraq, working with survivors of ISIS violence, Ukraine and elsewhere, it was a privilege to share some findings from the Alternative Security Review. It was organised by Lily Hamourtziadou and Bulent Gokay, authors of Human Costs of War: 21st century human (in)security from 2003 Iraq to 2022 Ukraine

Joanna Frew, Outreach Coordinator for RS, joined Secure Scotland for their retreat and planning weekend, facilitating discussion to support the team thinking through their next steps. Secure Scotland are Rethinking Security members, and are carrying out similar work for the Scottish context.

We are taking part (alongside Medact, Amnesty UK, and the Museum of Transology) in a discussion that is part of Queer Circle’s Gathering with Palestine programme, exploring the wider issues around Prevent and safeguarding, and how the UK’s approach to national security impacts communities

Launch Event: Securing our Common Future – Why the UK needs an Alternative Security Review

On Thurs 18th Nov 2021 we held an online discussion event to publicly launch the Alternative Security Review. Speakers discussed the need for an urgent rethink to our security after the failure of governments to make the commitments needed to avert climate breakdown.
