Security matters to everyone, but much that governments do in our name is making us all less safe, at home and around the world. It’s time for an urgent rethink – here’s why in 90 seconds…
Our goal is to help shift the public and political narratives in the UK about what security is and how it is best created, challenging existing approaches and fostering confidence in alternatives.
Our aims are:
- To create debate about current approaches to security – in communities across the UK, in educational settings, in the media and in the political arena.
- To challenge the assumptions, interests and values that underpin current security policy, and highlight its failings.
- To highlight the wide range of perspectives on security, giving particular attention to those who feel most vulnerable, marginalised and insecure as a result of current approaches.
- To offer ideas and suggestions about how policy could change in order to build a more just and peaceful world for all.
As the international order strains under a polycrisis of war, genocide, climate breakdown, inequality and authoritarianism, we are also seeing a higher military spending and an upturn in hard security rhetoric. Funds have been diverted from peacebuilding, aid and development and will negatively affect climate, social and welfare spending. This approach to security harms everyone. Learn why the UK must change its current policy and find out how you can change the conversation where you are.
